Opinion: I Love Anbernic, But Their Product Names Are a Mess

Anbernic makes great handhelds. We all know that. But when it comes to naming them… well, let’s just say things have gotten a little messy.

Take the RG35XX line for example. We’ve had the RG35XX, RG35XX Plus, RG35XX 2024, and now, the RG35XXPro — all valid models, all real names. But here’s the thing: that last one? It’s not “RG35XX Pro” with a space. It’s “RG35XXPro” — no space. That’s not a typo. That’s how it appears on Anbernic’s official site.

Same story with the RG34XX series. There’s the RG34XX, the RG34XXSP (no space), and then you’ve got the RG35XX SP (with a space). Then there’s the 40XX series. We’ve got RG40XX H with a space, and RG40XXV without one. Consistent formatting? Not really. Are these all solid handhelds? Absolutely. But it would be nice if the naming convention followed, you know, some kind of pattern.

Now, to be fair, the model names themselves usually make sense. The numbers indicate the series or generation, and suffixes like SP, Plus, or Pro give you a clue about the form factor or performance bump. No one’s out here totally lost. But when you’re writing about them — or trying to make comparison tables, product roundups, or even just filenames — the random spacing starts to get annoying.

The community’s already split on this. Some people are calling it “RG35XX Pro” because it looks cleaner and reads easier. Others are sticking with the official “RG35XXPro” because, well, that’s what it says on the box. For people like me trying to document this stuff, it’s a tiny but weirdly persistent dilemma: follow the manufacturer or go with what looks more readable?

It’s not the end of the world, obviously. Just one of those little things that makes you wonder: how hard is it to pick a format and stick to it?

  1. I like how you linked it with text “RG35XX Pro” (with a space) anyway . But is there actually a space, but in a different spot, after the RG?? Like consider the Cube/Arc/Nano lines, which have the space after the RG as well! Now they are being even more inconsistent, mixing the RG space with numerical models

    • Good catch! I didn’t even notice it until you pointed it out. And now it’s even worse — you can have ‘RG35XX Plus’ (a space after 35XX) or ‘RG 35XXPro’ (a space after RG). Man, is it just me, or is Anbernic really making product naming a rocket science?
