The VMU Pro is finally up for preorder, and honestly, it’s kind of wild how much tech 8BitMods has crammed into what used to be just a glorified save file holder.
Let’s start with the basics. It still works as a memory card for your Dreamcast, so you can plug it in and save your Sonic Adventure progress like it’s 1999. But now it also has a full-color 1.5-inch IPS screen, rechargeable battery, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, microSD support, and it can even emulate retro consoles like the NES, Game Boy, and Sega Master System. Yes, it can run Tetris and Sonic on the memory card itself. Welcome to 2025.
The rechargeable battery is a huge plus. No more scrambling for coin cell batteries. It charges via USB-C and gets you around 6 hours of use. Not amazing, but it’ll get the job done. And yeah — Bluetooth means you can connect headphones and use it as a literal MP3 player. Feels like someone gave your VMU a Spotify subscription.
Storage? It takes microSD cards up to 2TB. That’s not a typo. You can basically never worry about space again. The UI lets you manage save files, emulate games, and even back up your original VMU data if you’re into preservation stuff.
It’s priced at $81.23 and comes in seven colors, including the classic white and those semi-transparent shells that scream “Dreamcast era.” Orders went live on May 15, and shipping is expected in November.
The only catch? We haven’t gotten hands-on reviews yet. But if this thing works as promised, it’s easily one of the coolest Dreamcast accessories in a long time.
