The R35S is a surprise of the year. Released without any hype or fanfare, its purpose is to challenge the duopoly of the Anbernic RG35XX and Miyoo Mini Plus in the compact handheld space.
How does it fare? Very well indeed. Despite some quality issues, it stands out by providing what the reigning champions of the compact handheld niche lack – impressive performance. The R35S performs way better and is able to support PSP, DS and Dreamcast gaming which is currently impossible for the RG35XX or Miyoo Mini Plus. This alone will make the R35S at the top of the list if you are looking for a device at $50 price point.
Note: The R35S is no longer available for purchase and it has been succeeded by the R36S.
Pros
- Incredible value! This is the only device in the market with a RK3326. The RK3326 allows you to play some Dreamcast and PSP games and at this price point, which is unheard of!
- Decent and crisp mono speaker.
- Bright and colorful screen.
Cons
- This is just a clone of the PowKiddy RGB20S but offers better value.
- Buttons are worse than the RGB20S and they are loud.
- No built in Wi-Fi. You need to buy a Wi-Fi dongle and connect it via one of the USB-C ports.
